What Is Industrial Wastewater Treatment?
Industrial Wastewater Treatment services remove contaminants from wastewater generated by industrial processes at various enterprises.
Industrial wastewater can contain different pollutants, such as chemicals, metals, petroleum products, and organic and biological compounds, which can harm the environment and human health if not properly treated.
The treatment process typically involves several stages:
Preliminary treatment
After wet-type gas cleaning plants, it removes large solids and debris from wastewater, such as sand, clay, scale, and dust particles. The removal process is carried out in such installations as radial thickeners and horizontal settlers to prevent equipment damage and clogging at subsequent stages.
Physical-and-chemical processing
This process includes flocculation and coagulation, sorption, and ionic exchange. These use mixing, precipitation, heating, or cooling reagents.
Biological Treatment
Bacteria and other microorganisms remove contaminants in bioreactors for wastewater treatment facilities, a manufacturing company should have. This process is based on natural biological mechanisms and facilitates the decomposition of organic matter.
Water purification from residual contaminants
Additional treatment stages, such as filtration through sand, anthracite-quartz filters, or activated carbon, may be applied for finer purification.
Disinfection
For instance, the water disinfection process uses chlorine or ultraviolet radiation to eliminate pathogenic microorganisms and ensure water safety before discharging into the environment.
Efficient wastewater treatment reduces the negative impact on the environment and promotes a more sustainable use of natural resources.

Technologies Our Company Use in Industrial Wastewater Treatment
Settling
This kind of service includes removing suspended particles under the influence of gravity, followed by their extraction from the system. This process takes place in horizontal or radial basins.
Thickening
This process concentrates suspended particles under the influence of gravity using reagents such as coagulants or flocculants with their subsequent removal from the system. These services often take place in devices like radial thickeners.
Sludge dewatering
This process removes excess water from the sediment obtained through settling or thickening. Depending on the sludge characteristics, dewatering is carried out, employing decanters, vacuum filters, filter presses, and centrifuges.
Filtration
After clarification, preparing water for further fine purification removes fine suspended particles that were not eliminated during settling or thickening. Those services occur in filters filled with granular filtering material (such as anthracite or quartz). To ensure filter durability, they have a backwashing function.
Neutralization
Depending on the technological requirements, this process adjusts either increased or decreased pH levels using acid or alkali.
Softening
This process removes hardness salts from water. Depending on the degree of softening, distillation, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange filters are applied separately or in combination.
Disinfection
This one removes microorganisms from water by adding biocides.
Closed-loop water supply
For «dirty» and «clean» cycles after settling, disinfection, and inhibition processes.
Zero–discharge systems with the use of evaporation plants
The process eliminates water discharge into the environment. In these technologies, wastewater is first concentrated and then evaporated to allow for water recycling in a closed system. This process also results in the collection of insoluble salts in a solid state.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Case Study
According to the plan, the industrial facility is located in an area where the construction of sewers or the establishment of polishing lagoons is not permitted due to the government’s environmental regulations.
The company used an unconventional engineering approach and developed solutions based on the professional experience and knowledge gained from the ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy and chemical industry.
The primary source of water pollution is the tinplate production shop, where wastewater contains galvanic products (iron, chromium, tin solutions), oil, and suspended solid particles.
Our industrial waste water treatment company developed a technological solution for a pre-cleaning process, implemented in seven lines:
- Oil concentrates processing line;
- Processing line for oil-containing washing water;
- Solid-waste recycling line;
- Processing line for acidic iron-containing, tin-containing waters, and solutions;
- Chromium water processing line;
- Alkaline water neutralization line;
- Final effluent processing line.
Each line is combined into an integrated complex through a pipeline system, where the following processes take place:
- mutual neutralization of acidic and alkaline waters,
- separation of water from oil by centrifugation,
- neutralization of chromium-containing effluents with iron-containing effluents in the reactor.
As a result, a mixture with non-settling chloride solutions is created. This mixture is then concentrated using reverse osmosis units and evaporation in a designated plant.
Before evaporation, the concentrated from the water treatment plant and cleaned from galvanic products wastewater are mixed and undergo concentration in two stages to reduce the load on the evaporation plant.
This project’s concentration changed 13 times (from 35.5 m3/h to 2.7 m3/h).
As a result of the above-mentioned technological solutions, the company managed to get a complete absence of effluents.
Furthermore, the client’s industrial enterprise can now market by-products to interested companies:
- Oil with a moisture content of 20%;
- Cake Fe(OH)3 Cr(OH)3;
- Iron-containing waste (scale);
- Cake of СаСО3 and Mg(OH)2 mix;
- Mineral salts in the mix of Na2SO4 (96,6%) and NaCl (3,4%);
- Green coke.
